Guitar Gear Gems
The Fender Custom Shop announced a slew of novelties. These Winter 2022 the builds are all quite varied and there are plenty of them, so we’ll check out a few to give you an idea of what’s to come. I have chosen four of the most interesting versions, although there are 13 new models in total and you can find them all on the main Fender Custom Shop site below.
Fender Masterbuilt ’69 Relic Stratocaster
This Fender Masterbuilt ’69 Relic Stratocaster by Greg Fesler looks pretty beat up, but everything is aging as usual. It seems quite over the top and maybe a little extreme to some. There’s not too much Seafoam Green left finish on this Strat!
Hardware includes an American Vintage synchronized tremolo and this model has a 69-style U-neck with an aged maple fingerboard.
Pickups are a set of Josefina ’69 Strat pickups with RWRP middle and so it should sound better than it looks. It’s not the style of weathering I like, but I know a lot of players love this beat and workhorse style of finishing so I can see it being popular.
MSRP – $9100
60s Fender Masterbuilt Custom Esquire
The next step is the 60s Fender Masterbuilt Custom Esquire by Jason Smith. Luckily, this one isn’t as battered as the Strat above. In fact, it looks brand new and has a very funky finish. The finish combines Surfing Green with Silver-Green-Blue Snowflake.
This model has a single Josefina Texas Special single coil in bridge position and uses Esquire Full Throttle wiring. I’m a sucker for single-pickup guitars and appreciate a glossy finish, so I like this one. There’s a bit of a Billy Gibbons vibe to it, and I bet it can get really nasty too.
MSRP – $8650
Fender Custom Buffalo Telecaster
The fender Custom Buffalo Telecaster by Dale Wilson is described as having a rustic appearance. The guitar is definitely more of a work of art than a regular Telecaster. It comes with a set of Josefina Hand-Wound Original Blackguard Tele Bridge and ’51 Nocaster Neck pickups, all wired via modern Tele cabling.
Elsewhere, this model features a single-ply parchment pickguard with painted artwork and hardware includes a ’51-’54 Tele bridge with brass saddles. It’s one of the more expensive models, but it’s practically a work of art. Certainly a guitar that stands out from this Custom Shop Winter 2022 collection.
MSRP – $13175
Custom 50s Telecaster Journeyman Relic by Todd Krause
Todd Krause created this Custom Relic Telecaster Journeyman from the 50s model, which is a bit more Tele-like than the Buffalo Telecaster above. This one comes in a Tangerine candy aged finish.
Again, this model features a set of Hand-wound Josefina ’50 and ’51 Blackguard microphones. I’ve always loved Telecasters and this is a great guitar, not too flashy and I guess wouldn’t look out of place in many situations. Subtle, but sweet as an apple pie!
