Helping the Elderly Over the Holiday Season with “Be a Santa Claus for an Elderly” Gift Collection

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The holiday season is upon us, and when you hit the stores or shop online, you can help a senior in need in our community.

The 18th annual “Be a Senior’s Santa” program is a giveaway campaign for seniors living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and day centers in the region.

Anyone wishing to participate can grab a tag on a tree at NOMS CPW, Walmart in Forestview or at the Home Place offices. You can also visit the album online and claim “Santa Claus” on a label. Then you go out, buy that item, and return the gifts – preferably unwrapped – to the location and the people at home drop off the gifts on Christmas week instead.

Lauren McPherson, the home’s services coordinator, said most requests for gifts in the past were for blankets and clothing, but since the pandemic, many older people have been asking for more art and clothing. crafts, cards, games, picture frames and other items to give them more activities to do because they spend more time alone.

“I think it’s important to do that because it gives the seniors the impression that they haven’t been forgotten or left behind this season. For me, this is the importance. They lived here and gave their whole life in Toledo, and now Toledo and its surroundings are giving back to them, ”said McPherson.

The deadline for depositing your gifts is December 15th. If you’re interested, stop by one of the locations below.

“We get a lot of people who are just surprised. Even though they have participated in the program in recent years, they are surprised. We get a lot of people who weren’t expecting anything, just a phone call from their distant family, so they’re surprised and just a lot of gratitude, so much gratitude, ”said McPherson.

The “Be an Elder’s Father Christmas” trees can be found at the following locations:
  • Walmart – 5821 Central Ave., Toledo
  • Forestview Lanes – 2345 W Dean Rd., Temperance, Michigan.
  • NAMES CPW – 3130 Central Park West, Toledo
