How the donation of an item of clothing can make a difference in your community

When we clean our closets, we only see the personal benefits, like having more space or keeping clothes out of landfills. What you may not realize is that the donation of just one item of clothing can have a big impact in the community.

That’s why National Give Something Away Day was launched six years ago to encourage people to give back.

Nonprofits here in central Texas need your help more than ever.

“We are again receiving donations. We all want the clothes that people have and are willing to donate. It’s probably our greatest need, but, you know, the furniture is very close second, ”said Salvation Army Lt. David Beckham.

The pandemic has caused hardship for many nonprofits.

According to a recent survey, more than 66% of participating Texas nonprofits report having experienced a service disruption due to COVID-19, while nearly 70% of participating Texas nonprofits report having noted a decrease in individual donations.

But in difficult times, the community has found ways to come together.

“During COVID-19, we saw a tremendous amount of support from our community. Like most countries, we had to close our store, stores for a while. But we have always seen the continued support and generosity of our, our community through donations, ”said Serina Cole, vice president of marketing and communications for Heart of Texas Goodwill.

Things are slowly returning to normal, but the effects of the pandemic are still being felt.

“Without the support of our community and their donations, we couldn’t function,” said Cole.

She saw the impact of these organizations thanks to a man named Police officer.

“He was a veteran and had struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder for many years of his life. This is how Goodwill, thanks to our Operation Good Jobs program, was able to give him the help he needed to rebuild his curriculum vitae, the individual coaching that gave him the confidence to re-enter the job market and succeed. in this he does, “recalls Cole.

If you are unable to donate financially, a single donation of clothing can have a positive domino effect in your neighborhood.

“It raises their self-esteem, and there’s science, it’s scientific. They have studied this to the point where when you raise an individual’s self-esteem it translates into their desire to help other people in need. So what we do for others when we raise their self-esteem by giving them clothes, food or shelter or by fitting out their home with their needs, right, it translates into their desire to help others and so on and so on and so on, ”Lt. Beckham said.

If you don’t have clothes or furniture to donate, there are always ways to celebrate National Donate Day.

“We just encourage taking the kindness that day has meant and showing kindness to others and generosity to people, whether it’s giving something to an organization that has caused or is close. of you, or even buying a cup of coffee for someone in line behind you at Starbucks, just taking the opportunity to do something nice and support the people around you, ”Cole said.
