The Sister Duo launches the Learn to Read online store focused on decodable children’s books.

Empower teachers, parents and children by tackling those pesky multi-letter phonograms.

The Sister Duo, Lisa Bell and Nicole Cayer are the founders of Sisterly Love Publishing Inc., a Canadian publishing house. They will create and publish decodable children’s books and offer them through their online store, Learn to Read Books.

Bell, a certified teacher, noticed a gap in the market as she taught her son to read. Once his son learned the sounds of multi-letter phonograms, he was finally overjoyed to read. Unfortunately, Bell couldn’t find any decodable storybooks focused on these unique sounds.

In partnership with Cayer, an author, they will develop storybooks focusing on these multi-letter phonograms. Each series of books will include 5 books and twenty-five lessons directly related to the history of the book to increase exposure.

Statistics show that 13.8% of Canadian grade 10 students lacked the basic level of reading skills needed to navigate our society, according to a recent international study by the OECD. They did this assessment before the pandemic, after the pandemic, this statistic will undoubtedly increase.

Acquiring literacy skills in children is one of the most effective ways to ensure that they can reach their full potential in school and throughout life. Literacy opens the doors to understanding, empathy, critical thinking and the ability to learn throughout life.
