MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Modern Throwback, a vintage clothing company, marked its grand opening on Friday, September 17 with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The ceremony was hosted by Main Street Morgantown and left owner Chayton Luevano in disbelief.
“Honestly, it’s so surreal, just the fact that people, you know, take the time out of their day to love, come shopping,” Luevano said. It’s a pretty cool experience for me. Because, like I said, I’ve been online, so you know, the client-owner interface is never something I’ve been through. So yes it’s great. It’s a dream come true.
Luevano said he started his online business in 2016. He had always dreamed of expanding it, but he needed to graduate from college first.
While in college, Luevano said his online business helped him pay much of the costs at the time.
“I paid, not necessarily at school, but I paid for my groceries and all that,” he said. “And, it was working pretty well online.”
After graduating from the University of West Virginia in Supply Chain Management in the spring of 2021, he took the next step and opened up his physical space. Luevano said he looked around Morgantown and saw that there was no store selling vintage clothing, so he decided to open one.
“I thought it would be a great idea to open one,” he said.
Now it’s been open for a month and it sells the same type of vintage clothing in person as it does online.
“We sell vintage clothing of all kinds: WVU t-shirts, hats, jeans, sweatshirts, anything you can really think of; 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, ”Luevano said.
Everything he sells are “real vintage products” and are not reproductions, Luevano said.
And for the moment, he is the only employee of the staff, so it’s “a one-man show”. But, so far, business is going well. Luevano said the hope is to keep growing and keep finding ways to reach new customers. His message to people new to Modern Throwback is simple.
“If you want to buy some really cool clothes that are one of a kind, that not many people have, at a decent and affordable price, then stop by,” Luevano said.
The owner of Modern Throwback said he was happy with the way things have gone so far and is grateful to everyone who helped him start his business and, also, to those who stopped by the store. .
“Thanks to everyone who came shopping during the month I was open,” Luevano said. “And I hope it will continue like this.”
You can follow Modern Throwback on Instagram, or visit the store, which is located at 360 High Street. The opening hours are from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. everyday, except Saturdays when the store is closed.
